CLINICAL COUNSELLOR, VAW
PERMANENT FULL TIME (35 HOURS/WEEK)
Catholic Family Services of Hamilton (CFS) is a nonprofit, multi-service agency providing counselling, case management, education and support to families, couples and individuals living in Hamilton, Halton and the surrounding area. As Clinical Counsellor, Violence Against Women (VAW), you will provide clinical counselling and support to individuals and groups in the Abuse and Violence Intervention and Prevention Program. You practice and maintain the integrity of the feminist model in the provision of anti-violence counselling services to women and children.
You will provide individual supportive and clinical counselling both short and long term, support for the program and those who have experienced trauma, facilitate educational seminars, workshops and discussion forums. In addition, you will network and liaison with agencies, shelters and community groups to promote education and awareness related to anti violence. Additionally, you will provide outreach and education to women and children from diverse and under serviced communities.
Working from a trauma informed practice approach, you recognize and individualize services to women and children survivors of all forms of violence, provide ongoing development of curriculum appropriate to the needs of the target population and determine and provide specialty groups (children, women and men) as required. By continually evaluating group content, you provide meaningful systems of presentation.
Equipping women and children with information and support to enable them to understand their options, you will make appropriate referrals and connect women with resources for information and community support while providing a respectful, safe environment for women and children. Ensuring the curriculum is relevant and adapted to the current needs of the group, you will demonstrate cultural competency when working with marginalized community members while working within the system to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response to the individual experiences of women and children in the groups.
You will maintain standards of ethical professional practice and engage in clinical supervision as needed. You have a general understanding of the criminal justice system & courts, and will be collaborating with probation officers, parole boards, the Domestic Violence Court, local police, Crown attorney’s office and other community partners.
This position requires a highly motivated and self-directed professional with a Master’s degree in Social Work and/or relevant education and equivalent 3-5 years of work experience. Must be a regulated Member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) in good standing. Must have knowledge and solid understanding of the dynamics of abuse and the systemic nature of violence against women.
You excel in clinical judgement, ethics, professional standards, empathy, outstanding communication skills, active listening skills and understanding responsibility regarding confidentiality and boundaries. You are proficient at timely and accurate client documentation using electronic charting software and managing reports and statistical information. You are flexible to work evenings and weekends and travel off-site to community locations as needed.
