Music Director

Cedar Hill United Church

Part time music director required for Cedar Hill United Church, 241 Cedar Street, Cambridge Ontario. The position requirements are 12 hours a week and pay is based on experience and qualifications according to RCCO/CRCO table of recommended salaries.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports administratively to the Ministry and Personnel Committee and takes direction from the Minister. Collaborates with the Music and Worship Committee.

PURPOSE: To enhance and expand the word of God through the use of music in the service of worship.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Music Director provides music leadership and support for Cedar Hill United Church.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1)   Selects appropriate music for regular and special services in collaboration with the Minister.

a)   Music selections (anthems, hymns, responses, etc.) are to be communicated to the office no later than 9:00 a.m. on the Tuesday prior to Sunday service.

2)   Conducts separate weekly rehearsals as required for the choir and for the handbell choir as needed.

3)   Facilitates, promotes, and encourages the development of music within the congregation.

4)   Selects appropriate anthems and directs the choir during regular and special services.

5)   Accompanies guest soloists or instrumentalists during regular and special services.

6)   Meets regularly with the Minister to plan worship services and to ensure the continuity of worship theme (when appropriate). Participates in the advance planning of worship and other special events with the Minister, the Music and Worship Committee, and other staff as required.

7)   Attends the Annual General Meeting of the church congregation.

8)   Provides selected music for weddings and funerals performed within the church if available and when requested by the parties involved, at an approved fee schedule.

9)   Authorizes the use of church music property by others qualified to use the equipment.

10)Attends the meetings of the Music and Worship Committee at times designated by the committee. Attendance may be via report, phone, in-person, or video conference. Must attend meetings in person at times mutually agreed with the Music and Worship Committee.

11)Advises the Property Committee and Music and Worship Committee in a timely manner of any repairs and maintenance required to the church’s music equipment.

12)Verifies the accuracy of the music slides for the projector no later than the Friday prior to Sunday service.

13)Other duties and responsibilities may be added by the appropriate committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

1)   Required

a)   Skilled pianist

b)   Sight reading

c)   Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with staff and volunteers

2)   Nice to Have

a)   Ability to play the organ

b)   Experience with Christian Worship and ability to integrate a variety of musical styles into worship to support specific themes

c)   Experience in and enthusiasm for worship leadership.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The position requires preparation for all services plus a two-hour choir practice.

Vacation time will be taken at a time agreed upon with the Minister, the Ministry and Personnel Committee, and the Music and Worship Committee.
