BFM Foundation (Canada) is a national Christian organization with over 50 Mission Thrift Stores across Canada. The net revenue from all Mission Thrift Stores is devoted to the Joint Ministry of BFM Foundation (Canada) and Bible League Canada. These funds are used to establish adult literacy programs, provide church planter training, and children’s ministry programs, and distribute Bibles in many places worldwide.

 

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

●       The Assistant Manager has a key role within Mission Thrift Store Brantford.  As part of the leadership team, this individual must understand inventory control, pricing, separation of duties, delegation, and motivation.

●       They will work with the Store Manager to maximize production and sales floor success by modeling an excellent work ethic and promoting efficiency. 

●       They must understand the needs and wants of a thrift store customer and be able to motivate volunteers to deliver exceptional customer service.

●       All staff are required to be available as a cashier. 

●       They must have strong relational qualities and be able to train volunteers to effectively operate the Mission Thrift Store. 

●       They will need to respect the culture of the store and its mission.   You will be required to abide by the policies and procedures of BFM Brantford Enterprise Society.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

●       At least 1 year of retail experience, including some cashier duties

●       Experience managing people: engagement, conflict management, crisis intervention, etc. preferred

●       Experience working in a not-for-profit organization preferred

●       Retail warehousing or receiving preferred

●       Experience with Thrift & Antiques & Re-sell markets preferred

●       Experience working with volunteers

Skills
Must demonstrate the following skills:

●       Analytical and problem-solving skills; be able to solve problems with good judgment and make decisions independently

●       Effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills in English

●       Computer, including the ability to operate Word and Email, Google, Better Impact programs

●       Strong organizational, verbal communication, and prioritizing skills

 

Abilities

●       Knowledge of Health & Safety Protocols – Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario, AODA, and all other relevant regulations in a workplace.

●       Ability to take initiative

●       Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment

●       Ability to repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs without assistance and 150 with assistance

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

●       Work with the Store Manager to oversee the day-to-day activities of the store

●       Maintain excellent donor relations through courteous and helpful interactions

●       Monitor donated items and ensure they are ready to be sorted and priced daily

●       Organize & Price items focused on the hard goods departments including, but not limited to: Hardware & Electrics, Sports, Media, Music, Games, Housewares, Toys, Artwork, Office & Craft supplies, etc.

●       Schedule and manage Production Volunteers

●       Assist in training, guiding, developing, and motivating volunteers to reach and exceed their full potential

●       Communicate in English clearly and effectively with volunteers and staff

●       Monitor phone & answering machine & email

●       Ensure that the sorting area is clean, clear, and meets safety standards

●       Resolve any customer issues or concerns that may arise while ensuring customer satisfaction

●       Schedule customer pick-ups

●       Perform general maintenance and inspection of tools/machinery used in the receiving area

●       Observe and report equipment or mechanical failures immediately

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

●       As part of the leadership team, you play a role in building & maintaining the store culture.  You will be expected to lead team huddles with staff & volunteers.

●       Cross-train for other duties as assigned

●       Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes revolving SATURDAYS

●       Build and maintain relationships with other local charities and community organizations with which the Mission Thrift Store partners.

COLLABORATION

The successful candidate will be in a highly collaborative environment, with a team working toward a common goal. Every staff member is cross-trained to ensure adequate coverage of duties. The successful candidate may be required to collaborate (with travel) to other stores for training and development or other purposes.
