Project Description:
Redeemer University is embarking on an exciting project to document its rich institutional history from its founding in 1982 to the present day. This comprehensive project aims to create a publication that will resonate with donors, faculty, staff, and alumni, offering a narrative and thematic exploration of the university’s development, impact, and formative community.
The Opportunity:
We are seeking multiple highly motivated and detail-oriented Institutional History Research Assistants to play a crucial role in the initial stages of this significant project. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in historical research, archival work, and potentially contribute to the editorial process of a publication. The successful candidates will primarily be responsible for executing the research plan under the guidance of the project lead. There may also be opportunities to assist with copyediting tasks as the project progresses.
Responsibilities:
Research & Analysis (Primarily):
Archival Research: Assist in identifying, accessing, and reviewing institutional records
Develop strategies for navigating and understanding archival materials.
Take detailed and accurate notes, and organize research findings effectively.
Oral History Support: Assist in the preparation for and potential execution of oral history interviews, including:
Contributing to the development of interview protocols and questions.
Scheduling and coordinating interviews (as needed).
Potentially assisting with the recording and transcription of interviews (training provided).
Ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines for oral history research.
Secondary Source Research: Identify and gather relevant books, articles, reports, and other publications related to Redeemer University’s history and the broader context of higher education.
Data Organization: Maintain organized and accessible records of all research materials, including notes, transcripts, and digital files.
Preliminary Synthesis: Assist in the initial analysis of research findings to identify key themes, events, and individuals relevant to the university’s history.
Copyediting (Potential):
Assist with the review of draft manuscript sections for clarity, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency in style.
Contribute to the application of a consistent style guide.
Provide constructive feedback on the written content.
Qualifications:
● Currently enrolled in a degree program in History, English, or a related field.
● Strong interest in historical research and storytelling.
● Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
● Exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Access to own transportation is highly desirable (for purposes of archival research and interviewing)
● An understanding of and appreciation for the mission and values of Redeemer University
